The Lego Movie second trailer, and more!

FThe second trailer has been released for The Lego Movie, and it's full of awesome:

I love everything about this! How EVERYTHING is made of Lego. How there are so many nods back to older Lego sets, and clever building techniques. How all the animation is done as if it were a real Lego stop motion. How Batman is so into himself and ever so slightly inept!

Continue after the jump for screencaps to scrutinise all the cool details. Plus a look at the teaser trailers that preceeded the release of this one!

There's loads of great signage in The Lego Movie's Lego city, which is apparently called Bricksburg. Lots of jokes, and nods (Friends' Heartlake City is down the road). But also quite authoritarian, giving us an insight into the dystopia lurking in this Lego world! I love how all the cars are at proper one-minifigure wide size too!

There's a nice little animation trick in the shave shot, the foam just vanishes mid-stroke, as if the animators had to have swapped a head with printed foam out for the clean shaven head.

Got to love how happy Space-guy is, especially next to grumpy old Batman:

So, that's a brick-built unicorn-cat... There also appears to be a big whale in the background. This looks like an especially exotic location!

Super-long minifigure cape for President Business!

Amazing ship! It seems to have a winged cow as the figurehead:

Possibly my favourite detail of the animation: Brick-built explosions! Amazing:

I hope they release a set of the double-decker-couch, so many clear parts!

That's this trailer. But there's more! Over the last few days they have also released several character-specific teaser trailers, and USA Today also posted some character profiles. Here's our hero, Emmet:

USA Today describe Emmet thusly:
The very, very normal construction worker accidentally finds himself anointed "The Special" by a band of rebels who believe he is the key to saving their world from a controlling dictator. Turns out there's not much special about the hopeless Emmet.

Really cute smile outside Emmet's apartment: "Feel'n Blue? Try Smiling!"

And another amazing example of the Lego landscapes from this film:

Kind of looks like the construction crew here are in the middle of a musical number!

Then we have our kick-ass heroine, Wyldstyle, which USA Today summarised like this:
The free-spirited Master Builder has an independent streak as wild as the color streaks in her plastic hair. She's a car-building specialist, tough and respected.

Another beautiful little detail, all the robots' sparking explosions are magic wands!

The strange-haired gloriously over-the-top bad guy, President Business, described by USA Today:
President Business is an uptight CEO who wants the world to fit into his well-organized plan. Secretly, he's also Lord Business, who oversees a robot militia and attempts to take over the Lego world.

I love how Octan is an evil corporation. Puts a whole new spin on decades of Lego sets!

I didn't notice until I screencaped this, but check out those pinata horses! I demand a "Taco Tuesday" set just to get those!

A new character revealed, the utterly bizarre techno-pirate, Metal Beard:

Looks like he might be the captain of that impressive ship (also, gold octopus!!):

And finally, the vainest super-hero in town, Batman:
He does have a few shortcomings. He might not be the greatest Batman, but he's the baddest character in the movie. And he's a good guy.

USA also described the schizophrenic Good Cop/Bad Cop (what an excellent application of the double-sided Lego head):
President Business' toughest henchman Bad Cop is all bad, until he finds out he has a Good Cop living inside of him. It's kind of obvious since there are two faces drawn on the character.
And finally, there's the tie-dye wearing Vitruvius:
We thought he should look like Gandalf, and it would be so funny if we had this voice that everyone trusts, and then we gave him the most ridiculous things to say.
Still want more Lego Movie news? Well, there's a little bit more, coming via Brick Fanatics, who have uncovered a list of the Lego sets expected to be released along-side the film:
  • 70800 Escape Glider
  • 70801 Melting Room
  • 70802 Pursuit
  • 70803 Fool(‘s?) Palace
  • 70804 Ice machine
  • 70805 Waste Crusher
  • 70806 Castle Cavalry
  • 70807 MetalBeard’s Duel
  • 70808 Supermotor Pursuit
  • 70809 Lord Business’ Hideout
